11th Sundown RetreatCLICK HERE April Friday 1st, Saturday 2nd, 2011
10th Sundown Retreat, 9th 10th April 2010
Well who wants to go to an early freezing Rally, April was not supposed to be cold but on the Friday night this year it got colder and colder. The usual crowd turned up for the Friday night of relaxation and good company, a few club members turned up early to set up, this year making it a little different with a pretty good stocked food tent down in the camp ground, no power cuts this year so the pub rocked with the locals and visitors enjoying the warmth and the large variety of food from the cafe. well done guys, I know that seafood chowder will get better!
A good frost on Friday night made things a little slow to start rolling Saturday morning but then things came alive, a nice day so it bought out a lot of people from Christchurch. Booze prices is always going to be an issue when you have a pub providing it, we had hoped to provide cheap cans and booze but with the government putting up the prices and the fact that we don't have enough numbers to warrant buying pallet loads of the stuff we couldn't get a discount price. But saying that the jugs of beer, Greta's Own, were $7.20 and that is way below what you pay elsewhere. Those that don't like it are just too fussy and don't drink enough anyway...... There was booxe there to suit anyone anyway.
The games went down a treat this year, I think we should introduce a new challenge for next year............"THE CINNAMON CHALLENGE" have a look on youtube, there are 1000's trying it but not many succedding, sounds like fun...not, but hey if there was a big enough reward $$$$ who knows.
Our food tent rocked this year with having the pies, sold out so that was good. Gave away a few to people who could get a dart in the right place on the board, seemed a popular idea, will do it again. Might have to look at providing bottles of water next year as the water up there is not too falsh to drink.
Over all I believe the rally was a success and look forward to seeing you all at the next Sundown Retreat.

3rd 4th & 5th April 2009
Woke to a beaut Friday morning, did some last minute shopping and headed off to Jules place to meet and head off to Greta valley, Steve, Jason, Jules, Brownie, Jeff, Vince and Pam. The early starters. Off at 12.30 and a quick stop at Amberley for a bite to eat than on to Greta. Started setting up and soon found that there was a big camp site all ready setup, gates don't open till 4 but the Mainland Riders were all organised by the time we got there.
Every thing was setup and going well by the time the other PMC guys arrived. THEN the power went off about 6.30 until 9.30, The pub without power meant no food being cooked so we ended up with some unhappy hungry campers, we got talked into bringing the breakfast forward to Friday evening, so a few of us got stuck in and started the barby and turned out a few big meals, 2 sausages, 2 eggs, 2 rashes of bacon, 2 toast and a hash brown for $10 was a lot more popular than I thought it would be. Kept everyone happy.
Saturday dawned rather crisply with a good white frost, I had wondered why I was cold in sleeping bag camped out on the top of the hill. The day started off slowly but gradually people began to arrive, we had a few wee issues with people thinking that they could camp on the top of the hill, which is the pub car park, some accussed us of trying to be high and mighty and looking down on the peasants, all I can say to that is 'it feels good'. No where the club camps is actually owned by the pub and not the caravan park and due to lots of legal reasons paying visitors are not covered up there.
Anyway we cooked breakfast again on Saturday to another lot of hungry campers. The Greta Valley Vollunteer Fire Brigade set up a sausage and burger stall and sold them for the afternoon and evening, sorry they didn't do as good as they hoped.
Rob and others took a good few riders for a jaunt around the country side, left at 1 and back at 4 and in time for the games run by Richard and Jason helping out. James won the iron guts competition again. This year we held the games outside the pub, next year we have been asked to hold them at the rally site so we may look at that again.
The evening was very pleasant a quite warm, The Ataries played in the pub were not as popular as last year and were maybe a bit too loud for the area they were playing in. Gary a drumming busker had approached the club about playing at the rally and we decided to let him have a go. This year we also supplied a fire in a bath and Gary played from the breakfast tent near it, we got some pretty good feedback about that. The night went on to the wee hours and this writer managed to stay sober and still have a good time.
We have had lots of complaints about our advertised reduced prices at the bar, they were not reduced as much as were expecting but did not have a lot of control over that, but with having some serious disccussion with the publican have come up with some 'major' changes to next years rally. $2 cans of beer, $4 cans of spirits were mention and a major prize draw in the offering so stay tuned.
Sunday morning we awoke to quite a wind blowing, it was OK for those in the camp but for us on the hill it was a bit of a nightmare packing up.
After packing up the 27 club members left and headed to the Nor'Wester in Amberley for a coffee and de-brief. All in all it was a good rally, a little up on last year so hopefully with what happened over the booze prices it doesn't effect us for next year.

Sundown Retreat - Greta Valley
|
4th 5th & 6th of April 2008.
Friday 4th, A few of us arrived at the rally site in the afternoon to begin setting up and much to our surprize we came across 10 real keen rally folk, we just had time to get out the entry sheets before we were inundated by them keen to hand over the cash. A good start. The few of us there just about had everything set up before the main contingent of the club arrived and then into the Cafe for a well earned beer and dinner. The club started running a few raffles and everyone was keen to take part, one of the raffles for a helmet donated by City Scooters was snapped up fairly quickly. Thanks for donation guys we made $250 on that, all towards Cholmondeley.
Not a lot of time was spent relaxing as motorbikes were pouring in until about 10pm, a little revelling held at the camp site and the Cafe and off to bed in a nice warm dry tent, but it wasn't to stay like that for long, 4am and the wind struck then the horizonal rain, fortunately all the gazebo's and tents stayed up.
Saturday morning dawned looking quite miserable, but word filtered through that the weather was quite nice in Christchurch and north of Kaikoura. The dampness in Greta Valley sure didn't put anyone off, they just kept coming. Again the fundraising started with the sale of raffles, the helmet was soon sold out and drawn and won by a lucky lady in Kaikoura. 8 raffles for $50 were sold altogether, one of the winners had left the rally and after making contact he donated the winnings to Chomley, thanks for that it made our total to $700 to donate just from raffles.
1pm the guys set off on the ride to Kaikoura via Culverden, while they were gone the others just kept on hard at work at the gate, checking in the many rally goers, quite a number of people visited for the day and paid the walkin fee of $15, some others decided they didn't need to pay and just walked in via other routes, shame on them, but at least one of them has made the $15 donation, good on ya, your a good bloke.
Evening arrived and with the weather cooling a little the publican allowed a few of the guys to use some of his firewood and drums and they partied most of the night in the camp, tough buggers those west coasters.
The Cafe was choker block most of the evening and the games were pretty popular with the horizontal bungy getting most of the attention. The Best Bike, furtherest Travelled and Rat bike awards were announced and prizes given out, thanks to all those that donated items, you can check them out in the links page. The band played until just after midnight, stopped just a bit short of expectations for some, but the party continued until after 3 in the morning and by that time this writer had seccumbed to the top shelf a bit and was a little on the cheerful side, the party continued until I finaly found my tent and sleeping bag at about 6am.
Not much time to sleep so up at 9 and started dismantling the camp, rather slowly on my part, being still so tender. A check on the breathalizer before heading off towing the trailer and down to Amberley for a well deserved Coffee at the Nor'Wester Cafe.
All up the rally was a great success for the club, which for the first time in a few years can fund the Cholmondeley Childrens Home Fund Run with proceeds from the rally and have an additional $868 to donate from raffles. We had run several raffles at AutoX where we had promoted the Club and the things we do.
